For forty years I have loved Chinese painting. It has had a great influence on my understanding of painting at its best.
Currently, all over the world, traditional art forms are in tension with people’s modern experience. This tension now challenges people in all cultures, both in the East and in the West.
This tension causes artists to reconsider traditional art forms. When an artist combines traditional forms with contemporary experiences new forms of art are brought into being. Traditional art, then, gets incorporated into new art. These new forms of art expose the whole of humanity to the wonders that exist in all cultures.
The works in this exhibition are an attempt to incorporate traditional and modern forms; paintings in a Western style paying homage to traditional Chinese icons.
The painting “A Mortal Rides a Dragon,” for example, has a ghostly contour(外形) of a Mig SU-27 cleaving the mists settled in a valley with five mountain peaks. The pilot who is a mere mortal handles this flaming machine with all of its powers of speed and destruction. This painting is a play on traditional dynastic paintings with the theme of an immortal riding a dragon.
The painting “The Fields of Pre-Existence” can be understood as a modernist color-field painting except for its landscape elements.
The horizon divides the solid line of a yang heaven from the broken line of a yin earth.
I’m so happy to be able to exhibit these paintings in China. It is like my tribute to China after my forty year love affair with Chinese painting.

我喜爱中国绘画已经有40年了,这深刻影响了我对绘画的理解。
如今,在世界范围内,传统的艺术形式与人们的现代生活发生碰撞,东西方不同文化的人们都面临着这种矛盾。这种矛盾冲突使得艺术家重新思考传统的艺术形式。当艺术家将传统艺术形式与现代的经历相结合,就会产生新的艺术形式。这样,传统艺术也就融入到了新的艺术中。这些新的艺术形式将各种文化的奇妙之处展现在世人面前。
在此次展览的作品中我试图将传统和现代的艺术形式相结合;同时在西方绘画风格中融入了中国传统绘画的元素,以示对中国传统绘画的敬意。
例如:在作品《凡人驭龙》中,一个诡异的Mig SU-27轮廓,在有五个山峰的峡谷中穿越迷雾。飞行员是唯一能操作喷火机器的人,这个机器充满了速度和破坏力。这是对于一个以不死灵魂驭龙为主题的绘画作品的游戏之作。作品《前世的疆域》除了它的景物元素,可以被理解成现代主义色域绘画作品。地平线将表示阳性天堂的实线和表示阴性土地的虚线区别开来。
我很高兴能够在中国展出这些作品。喜爱中国绘画四十年了,这也算是我表达的一点心意吧!
